Since 1989, AWARE has led sustainability in Whistler, starting with outfitting the municipality’s recycling program, and today we continue to drive waste reduction and environmental stewardship through our Zero Waste Heroes program, helping events achieve their zero waste goals.

The Challenge

Hosting large-scale events presents a significant challenge in managing waste and minimizing environmental impact, as they often result in excessive waste generation, resource consumption, and carbon emissions.

Simply put, all products and services have environmental impacts, from the extraction of raw materials for production to manufacture, distribution, use and disposal. There are ways that we can prevent, reduce and reuse materials, and that’s where we can all make a difference.

Leading the Way to Zero Waste events

We approach waste management by focusing on every level of the waste hierarchy, prioritizing waste prevention and reduction first, then diversion, and finally disposal as a last resort. AWARE is committed to creating a sustainable, climate-resilient community, and our Zero Waste Heroes program is designed to help your organization make a meaningful impact. Our services include:

  1. Pre-event  to identify waste reduction opportunities and guide your team on sustainable material choices
  2. On-site waste stations with trained staff to ensure proper sorting of recycling, composting, and landfill waste
  3. Post-event reporting to evaluate your event’s waste diversion success and provide recommendations for future improvements
