As a community with strong sustainability goals, AWARE is excited to offer its seventh year of free workshops educating youth on local and global waste issues.
In partnership with Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD), AWARE will be delivering the free Zero Waste Education workshops in classrooms during the 2023/2024 school year throughout the SLRD. The workshops are designed to be interactive, fun and engaging with students learning practical waste skills that can be easily integrated into everyday routines.
The Zero Waste Education Workshops aim to:
- Increase knowledge and awareness of waste issues, on the global scale and in students’ home communities.
- Build an understanding of key actions we can each take to reduce waste and keep things out of the landfill.
- Empower students to become zero waste champions in their homes, schools and communities.
This year, workshops are offered to Grades 4, 7 and 10 and are available on a first-come first-served basis, so teachers are encouraged to sign up classes early.
The SLRD have been supporting waste educational programs since 2004 with huge success. Workshops are delivered by AWARE Whistler and to date the program has provided over 279 workshops, educating more than 6,000 students in zero waste action, across the communities of Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, D’Arcy, Mount Currie and Lillooet.
