Priority Habitat Framework

Protecting Whistler’s natural beauty starts with understanding it.

Priority Habitat Framework

The updated Priority Habitat Framework and enhanced ecological mapping give us the tools to make informed decisions that safeguard our environment for generations to come. From preserving vital biodiversity to enhancing climate resilience, these priority habitats are key to maintaining the health of our ecosystems.

Priority Habitat Framework + GIS Mapping

With the input of AWARE and many other organizations and individuals, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) developed the Priority Habitat Framework in 2023, a high-level strategic plan to help protect Whistler’s most important natural habitat. This project aims to identify, protect, restore and connect Whistler’s most important natural areas to support key local species and biodiversity. Protecting Whistler’s priority habitat also supports our community’s resilience to climate change.

Updated (2024) Priority Habitat mapping is available on Whistler’s GIS Whistler Map. This mapping is accompanied by a Mapping and Technical Report which outlines the definitions, rationale and prioritization of Whistler’s Priority Habitats, as well as providing mapping source data.  The Priority Habitat Framework and updated mapping will help improve protection of Whistler’s key natural areas and biodiversity.

Threats to important habitat in Whistler include drought, flooding, wildfire, invasive species, forest harvesting and thinning, recreation and development. Protecting habitat is one of the most effective ways to protect species and biodiversity.
